Steve chalks up new record

22/04/2007 Steve Chalke runs back into the record books!
Broadcaster and social entrepreneur Steve Chalke MBE has bounced back into the record books, after he raised well over £1.8million in sponsorship (total tbc) on today's Flora London Marathon.
He also finished the race in 3hrs 58mins and 40s, making him the fastest-earning sportsperson in history, at a rate of almost half a million pounds an hour, more than the world's ten best-paid footballers put together.

http://www.oasisuk.org/

In 2005, Steve became the official record-holder for the most money ever raised through a marathon, raising £1.25 million for the work of Oasis, the charity he founded in 1985. But in 2006, Sir Steve Redgrave raised £1.78 million, and set a new Guinness World Record. However, he only registered this record a fortnight before today's marathon, meaning Steve Chalke had to devote every effort to a final fundraising push.
Steve Chalke was able to confirm, on crossing the finishing line of today's Flora London Marathon, that his sponsorship total before the race began was already £1.85 million – and that with his team still counting the cash, he could eventually top the £2 million mark.
All this money will go to the work of Oasis, which works in ten countries across the globe with some of the world's most disadvantaged people. Oasis delivers pioneering housing, healthcare and educational initiatives that bring transformation to both individuals and whole communities.

Living Prayer

A Living Prayer

In this world I walk alone

with no place to call my home

But there's One who holds my hand

The rugged road through barren lands

The way is dark, the road is steep

But He's become my eyes to see

The strength to climb, my griefs to bear

This Savior lives inside me there

In Your love I find release

A haven from my unbelief

Take my life and let me be

A living prayer my God to thee

In these trials of life I find

Another Voice inside my mind

He comforts me and bids me live

Inside the love the Father gives

In your love I find release

A haven from my unbelief

Take my life and let me be

A living prayer

my God to thee

take my life and let me be

A living prayer my God to thee

lyrics by Alison Krauss

THE Heavyweight champion.

The road is long
With many a winding turn
That leads us to who knows where
Who knows where
But I'm strong
Strong enough to carry him
He ain't heavy,
he's my brother

So on we go
His welfare is of my concern
No burden is he, to bear
We'll get there
For I know
He would not encumber me
He ain't heavy,
he's my brother

If I'm laden at all
I'm laden with sadness
That everyone's heart
Isn't filled with the gladness
Of love for one another
It's a long, long road
From which there is no return
While we're on our way to there
Why not share
And the load
Doesn't weigh me down at all
He ain't heavy, he's my brother
He ain't heavy, he's my brother.
Lyrics Neil Diamond

Sow what??

I bought some grass seed yesterday, nothing amazing about that, but opening the box looking at all those seeds waiting to be sown.It's marvellous how they stay dormant until the time comes for them to be scattered. It's only then, that the life within them bursts out, and they fulfil their purpose.

Alpha is up and running and I here encouraging feedback. People like seeds need the right environment for their spiritual life to grow and develop, but we must be careful and not take all this good news at face value as the Parable of the sower teaches us.We as (mature) Christians need to play our part in the growth process, we are all still growing, and the experiences we go through help us to help others.

"And when much people were gathered together, and were come to him out of every city, he spake by a parable: a sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear."—Luke 8:4-8.

Keep on running!

Today is the day when thousands of dedicated people run the London marathon. They have trained and strained for hours and hours preparing their bodies and minds for this one special day.26 miles of physical endurance, few will find it easy,others will struggle hitting the wall, others will fall by the way but at least they tried , someone once said" better to have tried and failed, than not to have tried at all" and a great deal of money raised for charities in the process.Good role models are few in the race of life but if you find one seek their wisdom watch them at work ask them questions and learn.Joe is in his nineties he has run the race and continues His work though his physical pace has slowed his spiritual life is still strong. Seek out the wise, and run along side them for a while.
Marathon quote"Pain is temporary,failure is forever"

1 Cor 9:24-25 (TEB) ...In a race all the runners take part in it, but only one of them wins the prize. Run, then, in such a way as to win the prize. Every athlete in training submits to strict discipline; he does so in order to be crowned with a wreath that will not last; but we do it for one that will last forever.

1 Tim 4:7-10 (TEB) ...Keep yourself in training for a godly life. Physical exercise has some value in it, but spiritual exercise is valuable in every way, because it promises life both for now and for the future. This is a true saying, to be completely accepted and believed. That is why we struggle and work hard...

Working with difficult personalities.

UCB NOTES 22 Apr 2007
'...AS MUCH AS LIETH IN YOU, LIVE PEACEABLY WITH ALL MEN.' ROMANS 12:18
Many people dream of being in full time ministry. Their goal is to work where there's praise music playing and co-workers praying. With Scripture verses on the wall and crosses around every neck, they imagine such a place to be holy, always joyful and peaceful. They believe that in such a place one of their primary sources of stress - getting along with difficult people - will disappear. Don't you believe it! Paul and Barnabas, two great Christian leaders, fought so badly over John Mark that they had to split up. The early church experienced financial squabbles, moral scandals and doctrinal disputes. Understand this: until the Lord comes back you'll always experience difficulty relating to certain people. There's very little difference in how people operate when they're under pressure. The mind is not new, it is constantly being renewed - even the minds of Christians. This doesn't mean they're not sincere, it just means they're not as mature as they should be. Pettiness, greed, ambition and favouritism all creep in as the enemy fires his darts and hopes to create a flame. So if we are going to thrive in our hostile environments, we must increase our capacity to work with difficult personalities. How? By preparing yourself spiritually through prayer and the reading of God's Word before you get to work. By committing to be Christ-like on the job in your attitudes and actions. Will you always succeed? No! Will you be stretched? Yes! Can it be done? Absolutely! '"My grace is sufficient for thee..."' (2 Corinthians 12:9 KJV). How do you become more gracious? By drawing on God's grace each day!

Sorry

What have I got to do to make you love me
What have I got to do to make you care
What do I do when lightning strikes me
And I wake to find that you're not there
What do I do to make you want me
What have I got to do to be heard
What do I say when it's all over
And sorry seems to be the hardest word
It's sad, so sad
It's a sad, sad situation
And it's getting more and more absurd
It's sad, so sad
Why can't we talk it over
Oh it seems to me
That sorry seems to be the hardest word
What do I do to make you love me
What have I got to do to be heard
What do I do when lightning strikes me
What have I got to do What have I got to do
When sorry seems to be the hardest word

Slow down!!!

Sunday, just popped out for a walk while dinners cooking, the sun is shinning and the moor is quite peaceful after the Easter bank holiday.Walking along the canal towpath as narrow boats pass and fishermen with their long carbon fibre poles watch and wait, life slows to a snails pace.Life seems so rushed at times, yet when we take a moment to take in the beauty of the blossom and re tune our ears away from the traffic noise with the thumping bass of passing youngsters in their mobile discos,stopping a while to chat with passing friends, our spirit is gently calmed and we are temporarily refocused..

Thank the Lord for the Promise of Eternity and the chance to Enjoy and Cherish what Life is really all about.

Are you moving too fast?
Ucb notes 14 Apr 2007
''...ONE WHO MOVES TOO HURRIEDLY MISSES THE WAY.' PROVERBS 19:2
John Ortberg writes: 'When I first moved to Chicago I called a friend - the wisest spiritual man I know - and asked him, "What do I need to do to be healthy spiritually?" He said, "You must ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life." There was a long pause, and I finally said "Okay". I wrote that one down. "Now, what else do you have to tell me, because I don't have much time and I want to get a lot of wisdom out of this conversation". He replied "There is nothing else. Hurry is the great enemy of spiritual life. You can hardly do anything the way Jesus did it if you're in a hurry. Jesus was often busy, but never hurried. Hurry is an inward condition in which you're so frantic and preoccupied that you're unable to receive love from the Father, unable to be present with other people, or to give love to them"' Understand this: things will not just 'settle down'. If you wait to get around to what really matters, you'll never do what God made you to do! Your soul will wither. You must ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life. Furthermore, no one else can do this for you - not your boss, your pastor, your spouse, your kids, or your best friend. You must do this for yourself. Take a moment and ponder these two scriptures: 1) 'The fear of the Lord leads to life: Then one rests content, untouched by trouble' (Proverbs 19:23 NIV). 2) 'Desire without knowledge

Praise HIM Praise Hymn

On Saturday we enjoyed an amazing evening at the Albert Hall for Prom Praise. To lift up our voices with good friends and thousands of others to the King of kings was so uplifting. Its times like this when we can put our cares and concerns to oneside, enjoying the gift of music a conductor enthusing his orchestra drawing out the best and giving all the glory to Him.
Praise God for Good friends..

Then on Monday evening we went to see Amazing Grace the film, if you get a chance you must see it.

You Raise Me up

When I am down and oh my soul, so weary;

When troubles come and my heart burdened be;

Then I am still and wait here in the silence,

Until you come and sit awhile with me.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;

You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;

I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;

You raise me up, To more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;

You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;

I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;

You raise me up, To more than I can be.

There is no life - no life without its hunger;

Each restless heart beats so imperfectly;

But when you come and I am filled with wonder,

Sometimes, I think I glimpse eternity.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;

You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;

I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;

You raise me up, To more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;

You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;

I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;

You raise me up, To more than I can be.

You raise me up, To more than I can be.

'The fields are white unto harvest'

The majority of us believe in God, pray and think of ourselves as Christian, despite not going to church. But if you cut out the middle man isn't it cheating?
Births, deaths and marriages. They're the only events that get most people in the UK through church doors these days and even that is too often for some.
But this doesn't stop the majority of us calling ourselves Christian. More than half of British people say they believe in God despite only one in seven actually attending a Christian church service each month, says a new study.
THE RESULTS
26m adults claim to be Christian
7.6m adults go to church each month
12.6m go at least once a year.
3 million would go to church if asked
Other faiths make up 6% of religious attendance
32m people have no connection with church
London has highest number of regular churchgoers at 22%
SOURCE: TEARFUND
'One in 10' attends church weekly It seems that while people find the church thing a little bit difficult, they are willing to recognise God. There's even a cute catchphrase for this absent majority - believing without belonging.
The church says the results challenge the UK's secular image, proving not everyone has embraced consumerism as their modern-day god.
It's not often that it has much to shout about. Congregations have been declining for years, according to figures published by the Christian Research. While some churches are growing and the rate of decline in congregations has slowed, overall numbers are still dropping. It is not alone in suffering this "curse of apathy".
Local organisations have seen a slump in membership, according to a new YouGov poll, which found 70% of people have no links to community groups like the Women's Institute, Guides and Scouts.
When it comes to faith, for some it's a case of disintermediation - cutting out the middleman. It's happening in many areas of our daily lives - the internet, for example, plugs users straight in to suppliers, side-stepping the need for distributors like shops.

Weddings are a church occasionBut is an expression of faith with no commitment to going to church just religion for the "me" generation?
In today's "post-modern society" people want everything on their own terms - that includes Christianity, says Dr Elaine Storkey, a Christian academic, broadcaster and president of Christian charity Tearfund, which commissioned the study.
"People are used to instant gratification, they are used to having what they want, when they want and without putting in too much effort. Some view religion in the same way."
Having a connection with Christianity is not a problem for most people, it's when something is asked of them that they start to struggle, she says.
"The first step to get people involved in the church is getting them to consider God. A lot of people identify with Christianity even if they don't attend church. Often when the chips are down they fall back on the Christian faith.
"The second step is getting them to consider how much their faith will cost them. That's a huge leap for most people, that's when they have to start giving something back."
Some sort of "vague Christianity" acts as a way for people to keep their options open, they don't have to think too hard about life and aren't pushed outside their comfort zone, says philosopher Dr Julian Baggini.
READ THE FINDINGS
Churchgoing in the UK [0.97MB]
Most computers will open this document automatically, but you may need Adobe Reader
Download the reader here"It's easier than going in the other two directions. If you take religion fully on board you have to believe some strange things. Discarding it totally means you have to really think through the consequences, that death really is the end and many people find that worrying."
But it is possible to do away with the middleman, not attend church and still be a Christian, he says.
"Often the key messages in religion are social, like loving your neighbour. You don't have to go to church to be nice to people and help them."
Spiritual or religious?
Some research challenges the findings that many non-church goers in the UK still think of themselves as Christian.
People are shedding their religious beliefs even faster than churches are losing their congregations, according to a study by Manchester University
It found that older people described themselves as religious, though not necessarily orthodox. The middle-aged saw themselves as spiritual rather than religious. But most young people held beliefs as part of a view of life that they did not recognise as spiritual at all.

Online worshippers select an identityYet some people are seeking the church experience, only in a more modern guise.
St Pixels is an internet church, which offers prayers, daily Bible readings and a chat room to its online congregation. The fact its on the net does not make it any less valid than attending a church made of bricks and mortar, says Simon Jenkins, its co-founder.
"St Pixels may fall outside of what is traditional but we still consider it a genuine church. It is a real parish of real people who don't stop being members when they log off. It is not a second-class experience, just a different one. The site appeals to a whole spectrum of people, ultimately we are hoping to encourage faith."
HAVE YOUR SAY
You get from Church a sense of belonging even if you don't believe
Penny, Cardiff
Send us your comments The issue of "serving" the church is not about just going on a Sunday, he argues. That is often an easy choice. How you live your life on the other six days of the week is just as important, if not more so, he says.
"Our community may not go to their local church down the road but there is still a huge level of service involved. People share experiences online, pray and write to each other. Online worship is not an alternative to service, it is another opportunity to serve."

HERE I AM, wholly available;

As for me, I will serve the Lord.

Here I am, wholly available;

As for me, I will serve the Lord.

The fields are white unto harvest,

But O, the labourers are so few;

So Lord, I give myself to help the reaping,

To gather precious souls unto You.

The time is right in the nation

For works of power and authority;

God's looking for a people who are willing

To be counted in His glorious victory.

As salt are we ready to saviour?

In darkness are we ready to be light?

God's seeking out a very special people

To manifest His truth and His might.

Our Paperman gets CROSS for Easter

“DISCOVERY”: ASSEMBLES & CLUBS
Helping children to find out about Jesus.

This last half-term we have been studying the story of Matthew.
We also shared how to make a CROSS out of paper.
One boy said that after he had heard me in Assembly say that Jesus wants to be everyone’s friend, he repeated the same message at his church Bible club.
When demonstrating the paper Cross, I have been amazed at the response at each school. At one school we were even applauded! I followed that by saying that Jesus wants us to clap Him for dying for us and the whole school
burst into applause! At each school I suggested that we put our names on the Cross and then explained that Jesus died for each one of us and wants to forgive us, all we have to do is say “Sorry” and mean it.
Lots of schools wanted to know how we made the Cross so that they could do it in class. Pray for the power of the Cross to touch these children’s lives.
Also do please pray for the Children’s Bibles. Pray that we will get more feedback. I just know that they are being used, but pray that they will be more read. Pray, too, for more funding for the project next year.
Finally, thank you for all your support and prayers. May I encourage you to keep on praying and to continue reading that special book, THE BIBLE
Please Remember to Pray for Andrew and the Schools work
