Vee Travers (News from Niger , Worlds poorest country)

Niger statistics:
• Population: 10,730,102
• Urban population: 17%
• Literacy: 17%
• French the official language
• Estimated Muslims: 97.6%
• Estimated Evangelicals: 0.1%

In 2005 Niger became the world’s poorest country.
80% of the country is desert, and most of the population is under 17yrs old.

• Life expectancy at birth : 41yrs.
• 12% of all infants die before 1yr old
• 1 Doctor : 36,000 people
• Adult HIV prevalence : 41%

This evening we had a visit from Vee Travers, recently retired from working with S I M in Niger. She gave us a powerpoint presentation showing highlights of the return visit she and her sister made in October to Galmi with up-to-date news about the hospital, school and generally of conditions throughout the country. Many of her comments and answers to our questions came as eye-openers considering the many privileges we take for granted here in the West. It was hard to picture a country where the vast majority of adults are illiterate – few books, advertisements, newspapers…. Also where there is one doctor serving thousands of people and the average life-expectancy is 41 years.
One of the greatest needs is for water, as there is only one main river running through the entire country and rainfall is limited to about 3 months each year. Individual families dig their own wells by hand, whilst for the needs of the hospital a borehole to the depth of 300 metres had to be dug mechanically. When we asked if people boiled their water for drinking, Vee commented that firewood would be needed to do this and that was in short supply! Perhaps this gives a flavour of the information we were given this evening and will prompt us to pray for Vee’s one-time colleagues who battle against so many problems and yet feel compelled to remain out there to help these beleagured people and give them a hope and a faith by introducing them to the good news of the gospel.

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight to the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.”
Lk. 4:18, 19.

Thanks to Mira for words and organising visit.

Please Pray for real people like Bishnu

Bishnu – Patient Advocate,
Bheri Zonal Hospital
Thanks Richard

Bishnu Batterai was one person I really wanted to meet when I returned to Nepalgunj for a visit, two and a half years after leaving with Lorraine and the children in 2004. Bishnu had worked in our house in Nepalgunj. I had heard that, after a time working in other expatriate households, she had started work at the big government hospital in Nepalgunj, Bheri Zonal Hospital, as Patient Advocate.

When I met Bishnu again in October 2006, in the small room where she lives near the INF office, she explained that she is working for New Zion, her local church. Bheri Zonal Hospital Patient Advocate is their ministry, supported by INF. She then told me about the work.

It is hard for us in the developed world to understand just how difficult it is for people from poor communities when they have to come up to the hospital. For many rural families, simply coming up to the city has meant sacrifices, as they leave their fields and income. Some have used up all their savings before they even get to the hospital. Many do not speak Nepali, or cannot read. Even those who can read Nepali find that much is written in English, or in a strange mix of English words written in Nepali script. The whole world of investigations, x-rays, labs, injections, clip-boards, charts and machines is strange and frightening. Even simple things like meals must be bought in the bazaar and brought in for the patient and family. Family members have to find accommodation for themselves in the big city.

Bishnu helps people to cope with all this. She helps people to find their way around the hospital, she explains to them the things that the doctors say, she finds out which patients are poor enough to need extra financial help. She helps people find accommodation and the best places to get food. Most of all, Bishnu befriends people. She told me about a man who had lost all the fingers on his right hand when he picked up a strange thing he found in his field. He started to take it apart, not knowing it was a bomb left over from the conflict between Maoist guerrillas and the government. This man’s wife had died previously, and he lived with his elderly mother-in-law and his three small children. What will he do when he gets home? Bishnu helped him to find what help was available before he left Nepalgunj to go home.

It is impossible to calculate the good Bishnu does. God alone knows what she has done. But Rosanna Clark, who is a physiotherapist at Bheri Zonal and helped set up Bishnu’s work, says that Bishnu is able to really get along-side people who need help. She does not look down on them, or talk technical at them, she just listens, cares, and understands.

THANKS JONAH

The following words were written on the tomb of an Anglican Bishop (1100 AD) in the crypts of Westminster Abbey and illustrate how one man recognized the importance of working on himself first:

When I was young and free and my imagination had no limits, I dreamed of changing the world. As I grew older and wiser, I discovered the world would not change, so I shortened my sights somewhat and decided to change only my country.

But it, too, seemed immovable.

As I grew into my twilight years, in one last desperate attempt, I settled for changing only my family, those closest to me, but alas, they would have none of it.

And now as I lie on my deathbed, I suddenly realise: If I had only changed myself first, then by example I would have changed my family.

From their inspiration and encouragement, I would then have been able to better my country and, who knows, I may have even changed the world.

Swedes trust Ikea more than the church

Swedes have more faith in their local Ikea store than in the church.
According to a survey by Dagens Industri, eighty per cent of Swedes said they trusted the furniture chain.
And though four-fifths of all Swedes claim to be members of the protestant Swedish Church only 46 per cent of those polled said they trusted the religious group.
People also trust Volvo (69 percent), Ericsson (59), Saab (57) and even pharmaceutical giant Astra Zeneca (47) more than the Church.

Number one beautiful daughters birthday today

The winking blinking little thing
Full of deep eyed witchery
Full of artless rollocking and ever busy as a bee
Making all the house to sing
She's the very joy to me
Waking sleeping early late
My heart is full of little Kate
Ah would that time would leave us so
But she'll grow old
And i'll grow strange
Content with loves' that round her grow
She seeks not yet a wider range
But years will come, and years will go
And with the changing years she'll change
Then through the shifting scenes of fate
I'll look again for little Kate.

'Let there be light'

Just watched Simon Schamas' Power of Art again, Vincent Van Gogh was apparently the son of a preacher, while Vincent was growing up he had a great desire to share the gospel with the poor, but unfortunately his zeal became his downfall and he was kicked out of the church.
He decided to start painting and the light he wanted to share on the streets, he put into his painting. But eventually his passion took over his mind and his tragic death followed.

In the words of the song.

"This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you"

Nothing compares to You

JESUS BUILT A BRIDGE TO HEAVEN

JESUS BUILT A BRIDGE TO HEAVEN

TOOK HIS PEOPLE BY THE HAND
LED THEM CROSS THAT BARREN LAND
PHAROAH CHASED THEM NIGHT AND DAY
BUT THE ANGEL OF THE LORD KEPT HIM AWAY
JESUS BUILT A BRIDGE TO HEAVEN
A MIGHTY MIGHTY BRIDGE TO HEAVEN
JESUS BUILT A BRIDGE TO HEAVEN

Never Ending Story??

The word of the Lord will live forever. - 1 Peter 1:25 NCV ucb notes nov 23rd 2006
Voltaire, the French sceptic, once wrote from his Paris office: "I will go through the forest of Scripture and girdle all the trees so that in one hundred years Christianity will be but a vanishing memory." In a twist of divine irony, the room in which he penned those words was later purchased by the British and Foreign Bible Society and packed with Bibles.
What rivals the durability of the Bible? We applaud the Number One Best Seller. We award the book that remains on the top for weeks at a time. If one claimed the lead for several years, we would bronze each page. But what if a book is Number One for 300 years? Your Bible is the most widely published and translated book in history - available in over 2000 different dialects. Why? Because it works!
Apply its principles to any part of your life and see what happens. (a) Apply it to your finances. Manage your money the way the Bible says: tithe, save, provide for your family, give to the needy. Test God's Word and prosper. (b) Test God's Word on your job. Follow the Bible's code of work conduct. Be honest. Be on time. Be efficient. You may get a promotion. (c) Test the Bible on your relationships. Forgive your enemies. Refuse to gossip. Do all you can to be at peace with all. Be quick to listen and slow to speak. (d) But most of all, apply the Bible to your soul. "There's nothing like the written Word of God for showing you the way to salvation"
(2 Timothy 3:15 TM).
Pray for Colin Groome and the work of Home Evangelism

1. Guide me, O thou great Jehovah,
pilgrim through this barren land.
I am weak, but thou art mighty;
hold me with thy powerful hand.
Bread of heaven, bread of heaven,
feed me till I want no more;
feed me till I want no more.
2. Open now the crystal fountain,
whence the healing stream doth flow;
let the fire and cloudy pillar
lead me all my journey through.
Strong deliverer, strong deliverer,
be thou still my strength and shield;
be thou still my strength and shield.
3. When I tread the verge of Jordan,
bid my anxious fears subside;
death of death and hell's destruction,
land me safe on Canaan's side.
Songs of praises, songs of praises,
I will ever give to thee;
I will ever give to thee.

'Refer to Makers Instructions'

I was assembling a fire yesterday, and there were a few bits I wasn't to sure about.Pride beaten I had to refer to the makers instructions. It all came together in the end.

UCB notes 22nd nov 2006
The word of the Lord will live forever. - 1 Peter 1:25 NCV
William Gladstone, Prime Minister of England, stated: "I have known 95 great men in my time. And of these, 87 were followers of the Bible." President John Quincy Adams declared: "The Bible is the book above all others, to read at all ages, and in all conditions of human life."
Suppose a museum of art commissions a painting to be painted by 40 different artists. They work in their respective studios knowing nothing of each other's efforts. Yet when all these many canvasses are assembled on one wall they create the perfect landscape. What are the odds? Or suppose 40 architects set out to design one building. Some know what others are doing - others are unaware anyone else is doing anything at all. When they gather to compile notes, the result is a magnificent blueprint. Could it happen? It did with the Bible. No publisher commissioned it. No committee outlined it. No earthly editor oversaw it. Though separated by 16 centuries, and penned by an unlikely assortment of kings, soldiers, shepherds, farmers and fishermen, from Moses in the Arabian desert to John on the windswept island of Patmos - one theme threads the Bible together. That theme is salvation through Jesus Christ. Your Bible is the most incredible book ever written. Every passing day validates Peter's prophecy: "The Word of the Lord will live forever."
The question is: does it live in your heart? Does it determine your conduct? Does it set your priorities? Do you hunger for it? Can you say "Oh how I love Your law! I meditate on it all day long" (Ps 119:97 NIV)?

Cross about nothing??

Archbishop attacks BA cross rules

Dr Sentamu says wearing a cross is important The Archbishop of York says British Airways' refusal to let a staff member openly wear a cross is "nonsense"For me, the cross is important because it reminds me that God keeps his promises," the Archbishop said.
"Wearing a cross carries with it not only a symbol of our hopes but also a responsibility to act and to live as Christians.
"This symbol does not point only upwards but also outwards, it reminds us of our duties not only to God but also to one another."

'24 hours to pray for the WEAK?'

2474HH it's started at SH

Today is the 15th anniversary of losing my best friend Chris.
Good friends are a gift from God and when you lose them, it leaves a massive void in your life, but I thank God for Chris's family and lift Ann,Sam,Lee,Hylda and the Family up to Him today, they are special friends.
That gap left behind is somehow filled with His healing balm(love) and as years pass the void is replaced with an even more special place in our hearts.

WHAT A FRIEND I'VE FOUND
Closer than a brother;
I have felt Your touch,
More intimate than lovers.
Jesus, Jesus
Jesus, Friend forever.
What a hope i've found,
More faithful than a mother;
It would break my heart
To ever lose each other.
Jesus, Jesus
Jesus, Friend FOREVER

'This is the day'

This is the day the Lord has made.
Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

'A word in season'

We are so fortunate to live opposite the moor, having a green space to enjoy in a world where everywhere appears to be changing into shades of grey by the ever spreading concrete jungle.
At preseant the leaves are a wonderful colour, something to do with the sugar content I hear.
Anyway Autumn, a new season is upon us,and last night the surprise guests at our housegroup were Kath and Graham, we made christmas cards prayed and sang songs together.they also shared about their new church Forest Town, http://www.foresttownchurch.org/
People come into our lives for a season and we are so blessed by them, but often as the season passes we may forget about them. So it is a blessing to stay in touch and share how God continues His work.
I'm reminded of those verses from Ecclesiastes 3 made into that classic 60's song by the Byrds
Turn,Turn,Turn.
To everything -turn, turn,turn
There is a season -turn, turn, turn
and a time for every purpose under heaven
A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep
To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time for every purpose under heaven
A time to build up, a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones
A time to gather stones together
To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time for every purpose under heaven
A time of war, a time of peace
A time of love a time of hate
A time you may embrace
A time to refrain from embracing
To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time for every purpose under heaven
A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time to love, a time to hate
A time of peace, I swear it's not too late!

"I asked God for strength, that I might achieve.I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey...I asked for health, that I might do great things.I was given infirmity, that I might do better things...I asked for riches, that I might be happy.I was given poverty, that I might be wise...I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men.I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God...I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life.I was given life, that I may enjoy all things...I got nothing I asked for-but everything I had hoped for.Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.I am among men, most richly blessed!" 12

'Scents and Sensitivity'

Pauline is cooking the christmas pudding at the moment in a slow cooker, so there has been a lovely fragrance about the house over the last few days . Reminds me of the verses

"...thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.
"For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are saved and among those who are perishing. To the one we are the aroma of death leading to death, and to the other the aroma of life leading to life. And who is sufficient for these things?"
2 Corinthians 2:14-16

Couple Sells Candles That Smell Like Jesus
You can find candles with just about every fragrance imaginable, from blueberry to ocean mist to hot apple pie.
Now there's a candle that lets you experience the scent of Jesus, and they've been selling out by the case.
"We see it as a ministry, " says Bob Tosterud, who together with his wife came up with the idea for the candle.
Light up the candle called "His Essence" and its makers say you'll experience the fragrance of Christ.
Bob Tosterud and wife Karen say the formula is all spelled out in Psalm 45.
"It's a Messianic Psalm referring to when Christ returns and his garments will have the scent of myrrh, aloe and cassia," says Karen Tosterud.
Wondering what that must smell like, Karen Tosterud ordered those oils, a combination that produces sort of a flowery, cinnamon aroma. Then she called on a friend who just happened to be a candle-maker.
"And in October, we got our first batch of 768 candles. We had no idea how it would go," Karen Tosterud says.
But once word got out they went through 10,000 candles.
"It's the only one on the market and everyone tells us it's very unique and nothing like it," says Karen Tosterud.
"We wanted people to be able to experience Christ in new ways and to be able to read a bible and have that scent and that candle as a reminder that he is with us all the time."
"You can't see him and you can't touch him," says Bob Tosterud. "This is a situation where you may be able to sense him by smelling. And it provides a really new dimension to one's experience with Jesus."
The candles never stay on the shelves for long. The Tosteruds say each one that goes out is like a ministry in itself. www.hisessence.com.
A prayer of Mother Terasa

Dear Jesus, help us to spread your fragrance everywhere we go.
Flood our souls with your spirit and life.
Penetrate and possess our whole being so utterly
that our lives may only be a radiance of yours.
Shine through us and be so in us that
every soul we come in contact with may feel your presence in our soul.
Let them look up and see no longer us, but only Jesus.
Stay with us and then we shall begin to shine as you shine,
so to shine as to be light to others.
The light, O Jesus, will be all from you.
None of it will be ours.
It will be you shining on others through us.
Let us thus praise you in the way you love best by shining on those around us.
Let us preach you without preaching, not by words,
but by our example;
by the catching force -the sympathetic influence of what we do,
the evident fullness of the love our hearts bear to you.
Amen.

'Pray for the prodigals'

'Glory days'

Some days are just so special, three weeks ago it was the birth of my first grandson Huxley. This Sunday a baptism at church, watching Mark being baptised was so good, seeing him come through from Alpha to a real relationship with Jesus so encouraging God bless him and David , Josh, Jacob and Amy. Remember to pray for them this week especially. (remember Screwtape Letters)
Glory days is the title of one of Bruce Springsteen's songs, and last night Simon and I saw Bruce and the Seeger session band at Wembley Arena, (birthday gift from Kate) superb concert the band was made up of such an amazing mix of talent coming together with such a passion for their craft.
God has given us all gifts to use, let's not hide our lights but be released into the fulness of Him who has given us Glory days.

There is Life after Debt

Great to be with Owen and Kerry-anne last night and to hear what they are up to .They are both keen to serve God and always up for the next challenge .
Owen is now a debt counselor working three days a week for CAP (CHRISTIANS AGAINST POVERTY) .
Go to their site for more info www.CAPuk.org .
The Charity was started in Bradford in 1996 to help the growing problem of personal debt, helping individuals and familys' with their finances.
Apparently personal debt increases by 1 million pounds every 4 minutes, amazing, scary, depressing especially for those involved.
A session with the client starts with prayer and a financial status interview, but in so many cases where the clients are so desperate , even suicidal, they cry out to God for help, and they get it .
Many hundreds have been helped and led to the Lord already, and with the debt problem spiraling out of control , CAP is a much needed organisation.
It is based in Hemel at New Horizons Christian Fellowship. http://www.nhcf.org.uk/
There are over fifty centres throughout the UK and now 15 in Australia and next South Africa, future plans, they hope to open 500 centres by 2020.
So lets remember to pray for Owen and Kerry-anne and the work of CAP in our town and beyond.
Please go to the Web site for amazing testimonies. WWW.CAPuk.org

For your meditation ucb notes
Icebergs
02 Nov 2006
'"EACH TREE IS RECOGNIZED BY ITS OWN FRUIT..."' LUKE 6:44
The Titanic received five iceberg warnings just before it went down. When the sixth message came during the wee hours of the morning: 'Look out for icebergs,' the operator wired back 'Shut-up! I'm busy!' Thirty minutes later the great vessel; whose captain said, 'Even God couldn't sink this ship;' was sinking fast. What happened? They forgot the truth about icebergs. What they saw above the water couldn't have sunk the great ship. But unfortunately most of an iceberg is below the water. Do you know what? That iceberg represents your life! The 10% above the water is your reputation, the 90% below is your character. And it's what's below the surface that sinks your ship. What is character? a) self-discipline - the ability to do what's right, even when you don't feel like it b) core values - principles you live by in spite of the pressures around you c) sense of identity - a self-image based on who God, not others, says you are d) emotional security - the capacity to be emotionally stable and consistent. Your life's greatest impact doesn't come from what you own, but from what you are. Jesus said, '"Each tree is recognized by its own fruit...The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart..."' (Luke 6:44-45 NIV). Whatever's happening today on the outside of your life comes from what's happening on the inside. God puts 'being' before 'doing.' He prioritises taking care of the inside (your heart) because that will determine what takes place on the outside (your behaviour). Think about it!

'Paperman delivers Gospel to kids'

"mum the papermans teaching us about God" a child was heard to say at the end of the Monday kids club.Andrew the local paper distributor has something he loves sharing, whenever he can he is telling children the good news about Jesus.
Whether its at a school during assembley or in one of the clubs around the town, sowing seeds into young hearts, he has such a gift.
His latest project is giving childrens bibles for free, delivering and distributing them to local primary schools.
His growing reputation as the paperman who shares the gospel is such an encouragement.
So let us remember to Pray for Andrew.

'MORE THAN MOUNTAINS'

Praise the Lord ! that Richard was able to use a working visit to Nepal to see how the situation for the general population has changed since working out there in full time ministry. It would appear on the surface that life is improving, but we heard of one young womans testimony, now working as a hospital co-ordinator (Gods angel) helping people unable to understand the complicated system find the appropriate care.Let us remember to pray for her and the ongoing situation in Nepal. Prayer can move mountains.Amen

'Let your yes be yes, and your no be no'

Indecision can be a painful and expensive journey, often taking us on a disruptive non-productive detour from where or what we should really be doing. Although making the right choice at the right time can be difficult, praying first then proceeding is the best way.
